Treating Pet Heart Disease
As our pets live longer, we see an increase in diseases of the heart. The professionals at Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital are skilled at diagnosing these life-threatening concerns and have years of experience in treating cardiac issues in companion animals.
Heart Disease in Pets
Heart concerns include heart murmurs, valve deficiencies, cardiomyopathy (weakening or deterioration of the heart), myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), and various congenital heart problems. Some breeds are more prone to specific types of heart disease, and our veterinarians will counsel you on the possibility of such an issue with your pet.
We have the most advanced diagnostic capabilities for cardiac issues, including electrocardiogram (EKG), digital radiography, and echocardiography. All these diagnostic tools are painless and noninvasive.
Diagnosing Heart Disease
At your regular wellness exam, we always listen carefully to the heart for any anomalies. This is especially important for senior pets or those with indicators for heart disease. If we do have a concern, we may perform a chest X-ray, electrocardiogram (EKG), or a cardiac ultrasound. These diagnostic tools are noninvasive and painless.
The chest X-ray evaluates heart size, evaluates for compression of the main airways by the heart, and looks for fluid in the lungs or chest (pulmonary edema).
The EKG, or electrocardiogram, is used to measure the electrical activity of the heart, monitor the rate and regularity of heartbeats, and look for indicators of damage to the heart.
Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital offers the gold standard in cardiac diagnostic technology: cardiac ultrasound. Called echocardiography, this sonogram of the heart produces a multi-dimensional image in real time. We are one of very few veterinary facilities offering this technology, with the skill and experience to interpret the results.
Whether you have an animal that demonstrates symptoms of heart problems or you are simply dedicated to regular wellness care for your pet’s health, the professionals of Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital are here for your pet’s heart needs. Contact us to schedule an appointment.
